The
showdown for the CAHL Cup Championship
between the second place Shockers and
first place
Shamrocks featured two teams with
top flight offensive capabilities and brilliant puck stopping
ability.
The Shockers possess eight different players who averaged a point
per game or better over the course of the season and are led by
a pair of 30 goal scorers up front in all-stars
Tim Robinson and
Adam Giesbrecht. Their
1.33 points per game defenceman
Matt Patterson anchors
the middle, while leading goaltender
Scott Ellard handles the
rest.
The Shamrocks are
powered by leading scorer
Geoff Zimmerman in
addition to three 20 goal scoring forwards in
Chad Shoemaker,
Cody Hull, and
Josh Hamill. Defenseman
Kent Gillings brings 27
goals and 67 points of firepower to the middle while all-star
goalie
Ryan Steel takes charge of
the back end.
The action got under
way at 10:05PM as both teams kept up a high tempo pace through
the first couple of shifts. The first goal could be critical as
the last time these two teams faced off, it ended in a low
scoring
3-3 tie. Just over two
minutes in,
Geoff Zimmerman
controlled the puck as he flew in on the right wing. Taking aim
he then wired a perfect shot over the far blocker side for the
first score of the game.
Three minutes and
eight seconds later, Tim Robinson,
the 33 goal man of the Shockers, fired in a short range game
tying marker at 9:43 to the roar of his team bench.
Shockers goalie
Scott Ellard was called
upon for some big time saves and responded as the Shamrocks
managed two quick point blank shots on a set up from the corner,
however, both shots were to no avail as
Scott Ellard maintained
his butterfly position and sent the two harmlessly away.
Shamrock Josh Hamill took
a wrist shot from the slot area at the 1:07 mark which found its
way to the back of the net to regain the one goal lead for his
team heading into the second period.
The Shockers were only
down by one goal and started off the second period on a mission.
Within the first 30 seconds the first Shocker shot rang off the
Shamrocks goal post. They quickly jumped on the rebound
opportunity however that shot just missed as well as it hit the
side of the net.
Over the next 10
minutes the Shamrocks
Geoff Zimmerman and
Cody Hull rifled in
the next two goals to increase their hold on the game to 4-1.
Daniel Swyripa, who led
the Shockers with five regular season game winning goals came
through once again for his team with a big goal, just 24 seconds
after the Shamrocks attained the three goal lead, to change it
to a two goal affair with still over one period to play.
The Shockers
goaltender Scott Ellard
ensured that the deficit would remain at just two goals heading
into the final period as he made a miraculous save on a Shamrock
two man breakaway extending his right pad just in time to stone
the deke attempt.
The Shockers made a
valiant comeback attempt however the Shamrocks all-star
goaltender Ryan Steel
didn't let anything get past him in the final period even as the
Shockers managed some short range chances and scrambles around
his crease. The Shamrocks also added some insurance as
Cody Hull launched in his
second goal of the night, while
Lanny McConnel and
John Fisher each notched
one goal to increase their team's lead to 7-2.
The final buzzer rang
through the arena as the Shamrocks celebrated their CAHL Cup
Championship win. The Shockers were awarded the CAHL Silver
Medals for their second place finish and the Shamrocks were
presented with the CAHL Cup. The CAHL 2006-2007 Playoff MVP
Trophy was awarded to Shamrock captain
Geoff Zimmerman who
finished the playoffs with eight points on the strength of three
assists and five goals which included the opening and winning
goal of the CAHL Cup Championship game.
