Weekday Division II Playoffs:

Blues vs. Reapers on Monday, May 7th

The Blues were up against the defending CAHL Cup Champions, the Reapers, in the first round of the playoffs. Reaper Joe Nitychoruk opened the scoring midway through the first period on a goal assisted by Brian Jennings to give his team the 1-0 lead. Even though the Reapers were out shot 17-6, it turned out to be the only goal of the period, due to Tyler Corrigall's exceptional play between the pipes. Tyler Corrigall, last season's CAHL Top Goalie Trophy winner and CAHL Playoff MVP Trophy winner, started off with three big saves in just the first 44 seconds of the game. He continued thwarting off the Blues flurry of chances including a huge glove save from a short range shot.

The Blues goaltender, Josh Wildey, started off the second period with a bang as he made a massive glove grab on a point blank chance to keep his team within one. Jorden VanCamp of the Blues scored at the 10:56 mark on a big shot which Tyler Corrigall had a piece of it with his blocker but still managed to find it's way into the netting. Later in the middle period, the Blues top scorer Jamie Sexton had a great chance on a breakaway as he cut in from the side but was denied by Tyler Corrigall. The Blues second top scorer Kevin Baragon had an excellent chance as well as he went in all alone and made a great forehand to back hand "one hand on stick" drag deke but was stoned by Tyler Corrigall who read the play perfectly. Corrigall continued making memorable stops especially his save on a point bank shot with his right pad and an incredible catcher save on yet another short range shot.

The second period featured great defensive plays as well such as when the Reapers Brian Jennings made a awesome diving poke check to stop a potentially huge scoring chance for the Blues. The Blues Chad Bolger made a number of key stick checks to stop the incoming threats from the Reapers.

After two periods the score was 2-1 and the shots were 34-13, both in the Blues favor. The two teams traded a few scoring chances in the third but there were no more goals scored until the final minute of play when the Reapers pulled their goalie in favor of a sixth attacker for one final surge. However, it was the Blues who scored. Chris Martyniuk notched a shorthanded empty net insurance goal which was assisted by Alex Smith with just 0:51 showing on the score clock. The Blues went on to win 3-1 and will await the winner of the other semi-final game, between the Rockets and Gorillas, for the CAHL Cup Championship on Tuesday, May 15th.

Tyler Corrigall was the player of the game for the Reapers as he made many outstanding saves and stopped 40 of the 42 shots aimed his way for an incredible .952 save percentage.
