The
Blues defeated the defending CAHL Cup
Champion Reapers in the first round and all that remained
between them and the title were the 2005-2006 Silver Medalist
Rockets.
The last regular
season meeting between the Blues and Rockets resulted in an
offensive showcase that featured a combined total of 13 scores
and a game winning goal that was fired in with only 29 seconds
left on the clock by
Jamie Sexton of the Blues
for a dramatic 7-6 victory.
Expectations were high
as the Blues and Rockets prepared to battle on the ice once
again, only this time everything was on the line.
The puck hit the ice
at 10:20PM for the opening draw and shortly thereafter the
Rockets moved into the Blues territory. Dangerously hovering
around the Blues net, Rocket Eric Havinga
scored only a mere 69 seconds into the match which sent his
team's bench and fans into a real frenzy.
The Rockets had
another opportunity just over a minute later at the 12:39 mark
only to be turned back by the Blues goaltender
Josh Wildey who made a great
save off a point blank shot. The play was not quite finished yet
though as Eric Havinga did
not hesitate and jumped on the rebound chance rifling the puck
towards the net.
Josh Wildey got most of it
however the puck still managed its way into the back of the mesh
resulting in another ecstatic reaction from the Rockets
faithful. It was Eric Havinga's
second goal of the game within just a 72 second span and his
fourth score of the playoffs.
The Rockets top scoring all-star defenceman
Jason Upton launched in his
team's third goal of the night on a shot from the left face off
circle at the midway point of the first period giving his team a
huge 3-0 lead early in the game.
The final minute of
play had begun and it appeared that the Rockets were going to
enter the final two thirds of the game with the three goal
advantage. That was when the Blues
Mike Johnson, from the side
of the net, made a perfect pass over to team mate
Kevin Baragon who then
buried the puck with just 0:41 remaining in the first frame. The
deficit was reduced to only two and momentum was injected into
the Blues as they headed into the middle period.
Two minutes and five seconds after the start of the second
period, Kurt Bransma, the
Rockets all-star point per game defender, charged up and
released a shot from the point which found its way through the
crowd and into the Blues net to regain the triple goal cushion
for his team.
At the 8:40 mark while
on the penalty kill
Josh Wildey made an awesome
save with his left pad on a shot by Rockets all-star
Scott Bouwman from just
outside his crease area.
On the same Rockets power play and just moments after a big face
off win by Rocket Mike Parton, 60
goal sniper
Steve Brandon scored his
team's fifth goal of the game as he absolutely wired the puck
from between the top of the circles.
After two periods of
play the Rockets were up 5-1 on the scoreboard however the Blues
still had plenty of firepower that was waiting to be unleashed.
Rockets goaltender
Phil Bonk had turned aside 17
of the 18 pucks aimed his way for an excellent .944 save
percentage through the first two periods and was needed once
again early in the final frame as he made a great save off a
short range shot.
Over the next three
minutes the Blues
Joe Reynolds and
Chris Martyniuk each
rifled in big goals to change the score from 5-1 to just 5-3
with still over nine minutes to go in the game.
The Blues continued to
press however Phil Bonk
wasn't permitting anything to get past him even as his team was
being out shot.
At the opposite end,
Josh Wildey kept the Rockets
at bay as he made two straight saves off close in shots to
maintain the score at 5-3.
The game wore on with
no additional goals from either team until there were less than
two minutes remaining at 1:48 when
Steve Brandon scored his
second of the game which gave his team a three goal luxury once
again.
The unrelenting Blues
fired in one more goal at the 1:14 mark to make it 6-4. However
Phil Bonk and company ensured
that it would be the last one and held off the final Blues
attack as the last seconds counted down for the triumphant
Rockets. The Rockets celebrated their CAHL Cup Championship
victory in front of their loyal fans as
Jason Upton was presented
with the CAHL Cup. The Blues were awarded the CAHL Silver
Medals. Rocket Eric Havinga
was awarded the CAHL 2006-2007 Playoff MVP Trophy for his
outstanding playoffs as he led the Rockets with four playoff
goals which included the first two critical goals of the CAHL
Cup Championship winning game that he scored just 72 seconds
apart.

chance for the Blues. The Blues

there were no more goals scored until the final minute of play
when the Reapers pulled their goalie in favor of a sixth
attacker for one final surge. However, it was the Blues who
scored.
Chris Martyniuk notched a
shorthanded empty net insurance goal which was assisted by
Alex Smith with just 0:51
showing on the score clock. The Blues went on to win
3-1 and will await the winner
of the other semi-final game, between the Rockets and Gorillas,
for the CAHL Cup Championship on Tuesday, May 15th.

saves and stopped 40 of the 42 shots aimed his way for an
incredible .952 save percentage. The Blues player of the game,
