Weekend
Division Playoffs:
CAHL Cup
Championship
Jets vs.
Pylons on Sunday, May 13
.
The puck dropped at
9:05PM on Sunday night for the CAHL Cup Championship between the Jets
and
Pylons. The Pylons all-star goalie
Martin Gregoire set the
tone early with a great butterfly save on the Jets top scorer
Chris
Macgregor
as he broke in on a two on one break. At the other end of the
ice the Jets goaltender Geoff
Hwang let his presence be known as he turned away multiple
short range scoring chances from the Pylons as his team was
being out shot by more than a two to one margin.
At the 6:15 mark, the
Jets 1.48 points per game scorer
Don Sheriff set his sights on
the back of the net which was just a mere few feet away as he
took a shot from just outside the crease area, however
Martin Gregoire
responded with a tremendous save.
Late in the period,
Jason Wroblewsky, the
Jets captain flew past the Pylons defenders for a breakaway and
took a big slap shot however once again
Martin Gregoire came up
with the great stop. The shots through the first period were
17-7 with the Pylons holding the upper hand. The score was still
the same as when the game started though, 0-0, as both goalies
were simply unbeatable.
Jets all-star
defenceman
Ryan Lloyd was at the top of
his game as he made an incredible poke check from behind
knocking away the puck from the ever dangerous Pylons top scorer
and captain
David Hughes who was a step
ahead and all alone facing the Jets net. On a power play
opportunity later in the second period,
Denny Englehart of the
Jets, made two amazing dekes as he went around a couple of Pylon
players to meet face to face with the Pylons last line of
defence, Martin Gregoire,
who then made an awesome butterfly save stopping the play cold.
A great shorthanded chance arose when the Pylons goal per game
scorer
Brian Abildgaard skated
in unattended towards the Jets net, however
Geoff Hwang thwarted away the
puck with a perfect poke check.
The Jets
Denny Englehart had
another great chance in the final period as he took a shot from
point blank range only to be turned back by an excellent save
from Martin Gregoire.
However Denny Englehart
was relentless and on the rebound he once again took a wrist
shot which sent the puck flying off his blade and into the back
of the mesh. The Jets erupted with excitement as it was the
first goal of the game with only 7:07 left showing on the score
clock.
The pressure on both teams mounted even further however
Martin Gregoire's
response was yet another great save. This time it was a colossal
glove grab on a shot from 39 goal scorer
Jason Wroblewsky at the
6:02 mark to keep it a one goal game. The Pylons continued
taking shots as the clock ticked away towards zero.
Geoff Hwang never wavered
between the pipes, not allowing anything to get past him. Even
as
the Pylons
David Hughes skated out
into the slot and took a big wrist shot,
Geoff Hwang swung out his
right pad to knock the puck out of harms way.
The final seconds ran
down to the joy of the Jets as they celebrated their CAHL Cup
Championship victory. Jets captain
Jason Wroblewsky was
presented with the CAHL Cup and the Pylons were awarded the CAHL
Silver Medals.
Geoff Hwang was awarded the
CAHL 2006-2007 Playoff MVP Trophy as he was unbelievable in
stopping all 37 shots for the shutout CAHL Cup Championship win.
Martin Gregoire was the
player of the game for the Pylons as he finished with 22 saves
on 23 shots for an incredible .957 save percentage.
